The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a utility closet, attic, or basement and is the indoor half of the system. Together these two units are what a Central AC installation puts in place.

The refrigerant line set runs between the two units, connecting them through a small penetration in the wall, and the thermostat mounts on an interior wall where it reads the home's temperature and tells the system when to run. A condensate drain line also runs from the indoor coil to a floor drain or outside, carrying away the moisture the coil pulls from the air.
